My first exposure to “quilting” was when my mother sewed sheets together with a blanket in between, tied the three layers with yarn, and call it a “quilt”. After many lessons, accumulation of unfinished projects, and an inventory of fabric, I joined the Kodiak Bears Paw Quilt Guild. The Guild allows me and many others to enjoy the beautiful quilts that are created and shared by talented women at monthly meeting along with practicing different blocks, attending quilt classes, retreats, and group sewing opportunities. . As for my actual quilt making expertise, I am a work in progress with the Guild being my “go to” place to practice this artistic endeavor….quilting.

My first sewing was at Grandma's house, making nine patch blocks. Before moving to Alaska at 23, I finished my first UFO, which included those blocks. After being nudged by a good friend, I attended a guild class in 2001 and have been a member ever since.
It is the friendships as well as working with beautiful fabrics and intriguing patterns that keeps my interest and brings joy to my life.

I didn’t start quilting 'til about 15 years ago. I had never sewed before and I was below beginner level! I love bright colors which is reflected in most of my quilts. The blooming nine patch remains my favorite pattern. I love seeing what other members are doing and learning from them.

I was inspired by Eleanor Burns' "Quilt in a Day" show. A friend of mine that was a guild member suggested I join the guild to help me learn how to put blocks together and increase my sewing knowledge. And from then on, I was hooked! I have been with the guild since 1996. I enjoy all the varieties of blocks for the most part and the process of finishing a quilt. Although I have many UFO to finish as many of my counterparts. Block of the month and show and tell are my favorite parts of the meetings. Trying out different techniques to improve or learning something new. Slowly I have grown into the role of treasurer with a little prodding from others telling me I could do more for the guild than just be a body at the meetings. I have the privilege of putting on the binding and label for most of our comfort quilts that we give out to the community.
